System Center Configuration Manager Overview

     

    Configuration Manager 2007 gives you the following features:

    Operating System Deployment

    Install Windows on Computers.

    Apply Updates to all Systems and Programs

    Deploy programs, updates and enhancements by dragging and dropping to computers or collections.

    Remote Management of systems

    Take control of Computers remotely and troubleshoot problems.

    Manage Assets /Licenses (Microsoft and non Microsoft)

    Check for license compliance for all programs.  Gather both a hardware and software inventory for all managed systems.

    Mobile Device Management

    Manage your mobile devices. Deploy programs. Remote wipe lost or stolen devices.

    Network Access Protection

    Ensures computers which are on your network are fully updated with security updates, and Anti-Virus updates before they access resources.  They are quarantined momentarily, while they are checked.

    Operating System Deployment

    (XP, Server 2003, Server 2008, Vista and Windows 7)

    1. Refresh the current system.  User settings saved to a share and a fresh copy of the operating system is redeployed to the current hardware.  E.g. XP Pro refreshed to XP Pro, no bloat ware or unwanted programs = faster PC.
    2. Upgrade the current system.  User settings saves to a share and a new OS deployed to the current hardware.  E.g. XP to Windows 7.
    3. Upgrade users PC.  a, The users settings are copied to a share, 2, a new machine is provisioned, 3, user settings copied down to new PC, 4, user logs on to new PC
    4. Bare metal deployments.  A computer may be simply plugged into the network and an operating system deployed over the Ethernet.  All relevant drivers, patches, and programs are installed.
    5. Server Operating Systems may also be provisioned. RAID controllers, RAID levels (Hard Disk Drive configurations), and Network Controllers may all be configured via Configuration Manager.
